Family therapy is aimed at helping families to overcome crisis, improve relationship and provide support for problems such as illness. Family Systems Therapy is one of the most popular approaches and views the interaction between family members as a prime source of discord. It seeks to improve individuals' well-being by focusing on the interconnected relations found within families. Family therapy can involve the wider family system - including significant individuals that are not biologically related.
EMDR therapy is a specialist approach. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a psychotherapy that has been proven to be effective in treating psychological trauma and is recommended by the UK’s National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Also, it is effective in working across a broad range of other symptoms.
Treatable symptoms using EMDR:
Health anxiety General anxiety Panic attacks Depression
Phobias Attachment disorder Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Sleep problems Grief and mourning Chronic pain Body dysmorphic disorder Addictions
Self-esteem and performance anxiety Disturbing or traumatic memories Emotional difficulties
Individual therapy (sometimes referred to as psychotherapy or counselling) is a process of working with a qualified psychotherapist to explore and navigate the inner world (thoughts, feelings, long-standing beliefs) to reduce distress and improve quality of life. Psychotherapy is a safe and confidential place to process emotions and for many a very beneficial form of self-care. It is effective for treating a wide range of psychological challenges, including depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, impulsivity, anger, relationship problems and more.
In the first stages, we will work together to explore your history and symptoms and will collaboratively create treatment goals. Processing your thoughts with the therapist in a safe, confidential and supportive manner can help you overcome the emotional blocks holding you back from living the life you wish to. Ultimately, therapy is an investment in yourself and can help you open the doors to many rewarding ventures.
Relationship challenges are common and can result from life stressors, differences in communication styles, problems in negotiating work-life balance, unhelpful relationship demands, and more. Disputes can often be resolved with respectful and caring communication. If issues persist, it can be beneficial to visit a neutral third-party, such as a psychotherapist trained in managing these situations.
Psychotherapy, and in particular systemic family therapy, is effective in improving communication through collaborative dialogue to develop shared meaning and understanding. The problem is the problem and the effect it has on the relationship. Therefore, couples are encouraged to approach each other with curiosity and openness to feedback.
